Alive in Hope · Thriving Where We Are
Hope Empowered Living
Lasting hope in Jesus changes how we live today. Peter calls us to holiness, reverence, and earnest love—not as people auditioning for God’s family, but as children learning to live from the grace they have already received.
Because our hope lasts, we can live differently now.
The sermon at a glance
This message brings the living hope of 1 Peter into ordinary life. We do not have to wait for every circumstance to settle before we can live faithfully. The Father knows us where we are, the Spirit is transforming us, and Jesus has redeemed us. Our unsettledness does not place us outside God’s care or His saving purpose.
Peter’s commands can sound like another performance to maintain. But the sermon reads them through the identity Peter has already given his readers: obedient children. We are not behaving our way into belonging; we are learning to live because we belong. The life described here is grace-given, Spirit-empowered, and Word-shaped.
The movement of the message
- Direct your mind toward coming grace — verse 13: Prepare your mind for action and set your hope fully on Jesus. This is not manufactured optimism or denial of grief. It is dependence on the Spirit as the Word keeps bringing your thinking back to what is true.
- Live as children who belong — verses 14–16: Holiness is not better behavior layered over an unchanged heart. It is the new life God has given becoming visible in our desires, conduct, responses, and relationships.
- Stand in awe of your Father — verse 17: Reverence takes God’s holiness and impartial judgment seriously. In the sermon, this is not an anxious effort to avoid rejection, but wonder that this holy God has made us His own.
- Remember the price of redemption — verses 18–19: Jesus ransomed us from futile inherited ways with His precious blood. Familiar reactions may persist, but they no longer have the final claim on our identity. We can name sin honestly, turn from it, seek forgiveness, and ask the Spirit for help.
- Love the people you can see — verse 22: Loving the unseen Jesus takes shape in sincere, earnest love for people around us. This requires more than performed politeness; we depend on the Spirit to transform our hearts while choosing loving action.
- Live within God’s unfolding story — verses 20–25: Grace anticipated by the prophets has reached us in Christ. Through the living and abiding Word, God has given us new birth. Peter’s “therefore” calls us to live from that received life, not to create it ourselves.
Grace given. Spirit empowered. Word shaped.
Jesus has not merely told us to find a better way. His blood is the price of our redemption. Foreknown before the foundation of the world and revealed for His people’s sake, He suffered, was raised from the dead, and received glory so that our faith and hope would be in God.
The good news is more than information about a past event. Through the living, abiding Word, God has brought us into new life. The Spirit who announced this grace continues to apply its truth to our hearts. We return to the gospel because it reminds us whose we are and supplies the foundation for holiness, reverence, and love.
That grace does not stop with us. As we depend on the Spirit, Jesus’ life can flow through us to others right where we are—even before our circumstances become settled.
One Spirit-empowered step
When an old reaction rises or you feel unsettled, pause. Remember whose you are. Ask the Spirit for help, and choose the next response that agrees with the truth of your redemption. Not to prove you can transform yourself, but to respond to the One who is changing you.
This week, pray: “Remind me of my true identity as a child of the Father. Help me live from the grace You’ve given me in Jesus.”
Then ask: “Show me one person right where I am, and give me grace to show or share the hope of Jesus with that person.”
Not to earn your belonging—but because you belong.
